Image
Legend is that Before ascending the throne in Madurai as King Sundara Pandiya , Shiva performed Puja to a Linga. The temple where Shiva did puja to himself is Immayilum Nanmai tharuvar temple. He plunged deep in meditation. The heat and the flames came from his body began to burn the world.  In order to save the world and bring Shiva out of meditation Vishnu appeared in his Krishna form and began playing his flute so melodiously that penetrated into the ears of Shiva awaking him. Pleased Shiva asked Vishnu to be with him playing the flute. Vishnu accepted and stayed here with Bhama and Rukmini in the name of Lord Madanagopala Swami, with his right leg pressing on the ground symbolising Vishwaroopa. He holds Shanka and chakra in his two back hands and holds the flute with the other two hands. This temple is next to Immayilum Nanmai tharuvar temple, Madurai. Achaladeepeswarar temple, Mohanur near Namakkal. The reason for the Lord's name is very much within the sanctum sanctorum. Inside there is air ( oxygen), but there is no wind. So, the ever burning lamp inside the shrine does not flutter or move but is perfectly still. Hence, Lord is praised as Achala Deepeswara.  Achalam means that not wavering and  motionless ( Sthitha Prangya). This happens to be a Parihara Sthala for Rahu and Ketu. Both have separate shrines and people running respective Dasa or having Sarbha dosha come here to do pariharam. This temple is also a Pithru dosha nivarthi Sthala. Normally when you enter any Shiva temple Chandra and Surya will be on the right and left side respectively. But here they are seen next to each other ( together) symbolising Amavasya which is the best day for Pithru tharpanam. Kaveri flows from North to south here as in Kasi/Varanasi and this temple is on the banks of the holy river.   People who have Pithru dosha or...
