Panchavarneswarar Temple, Uraiyur, Triuchirappalli

Beautiful sculpture of a unique creature matching closely to the description of Navagunjara. Navagunjara is first mentioned in the Mahabaratha written by Sarala Dasa in Odiya language in the 15th century. Arjunan Thapas to get Pasupathastra and SHIVA appearing as Kratha Murthy to test Arjuna.

Also seen here is Navanari kunjara ( Elephant made of nine females) and Panchanari Ashwatha ( Horse made of five females) seen@ Panchavarneswarar temple Woraiyur Trichy. It has a different meaning in Jagannath cult related to Krishna and gopikas which is dated 600 Years. This temple is around 1800 years old and has a different conceptualisation

Elephant and horse are very powerful animals but at the same time the most easily tameable. If kept under control and directed in the right direction they are the most adorable ones. But if they lose control they could create big disaster.  The horse symbolizes the five senses and the elephant symbolizes the nine openings in a body.

The five senses viz. Sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. A person who practices to gain control over the  five senses, which are the root cause of desire, will attain eternal bliss.

Navadhwara - The nine openings in a human body is primarily used in consumption of worldly pleasures like seeing, tasting, smelling etc. Once a person gains control over such worldly pleasures, he controls himself and gains spiritual happiness or eternal joy.
